Biography
The history of Deadmarsh has nothing special. Everything started with an idea, which seemed unreal at first glance. There also was a strong and ambitious desire to find a realization of creativeness. This group has come through ups and downs, inner crises and periods of growth. The work was interesting though difficult. However, there always was hope that everything was possible, because of much time spent on the realization of the ideas and plans. In that way lives Belarusian underground music. Support comes from pure enthusiasts and admirers who are always ready to help though they can’t offer much.
History.
Genady Gordon and Valery Zvarika, two schoolmates, were the first who came up with the idea to create a metal-group. Genady Gordon is the person who gave the group its name - Deadmarsh. He did it after he had watched the Stanley Cup games. Valery liked the way the name sounded and it was accepted.
With the coming of Aleksey Gladishev, who was a drummer, a new period started in the work of the group. January 8th is considered to be the birthday of the group though the first steps had been made before that date.
At first the musicians started playing famous metal compositions in order to develop their professional skills. In the summer of 1998 Denis Tushkanov, a friend of Aleksey Gladysh, came into the group. He was a bass player. Though the work was going on, the group still needed a singer. Sometime later, having listened to some singers, they finally took Nikolay Gidlevskiy. Therefore the personnel of the group was complete. They started rehearsing together and as a result of this, their own compositions occurred.
On June 20th, 1999 the First Concert of the group took place in the club “Alternativa” (Alternative) in Minsk. The concert was one of the events of the festival organized by the famous alternative radio station, “Zateriany Mir” (The Lost World), which belongs to the DJ Vlad Buben. The performance of the group included a number of well-known compositions of such groups as Metallica, Slayer, Sepultura, however in the end of the show they played their own song. The group had a success. Deadmarsh gained a reputation of a group performing covers. Only after some time the group turned to their own program. Each concert they added one or two compositions in the play list.
For several years Vlad Buben rendered assistance to Deadmarsh by inviting them to take part in “Zateriany Mir” (The Lost World) festival and in the radio program with the same name.
In January 2000 Genady Gordon left the group and one month after this bass player Denis Tushkanov did the same thing. In July Aleksey Bumin, guitarist, joined the group. They started to work on the first full size album, the songs were written in English.
The first record was made in the home based studio which belonged to Aleksey Shtalenkov, a friend of Nikolay Gidlevsky. The composition chosen for recording called “Bleeding Dirt”. An interesting fact is that Aleksey Bumin performed not only his own guitar parts but also the part of bass guitar. The reason for that was that Pavel Koren, new bass player, had joined the group just before the record, in December 2000.
In the winter of 2001 the first limited edition of the single “Bleeding Dirt” was released. There were nice reviews on it in press. The album was presented during the radio program “Zateriany Mir” (The Lost World).
The first stage performance of the renewed personnel of the group took place on March 11, 2001 in “A-Club” in Minsk, during the festival “Zateriany Mir” (The Lost World) part 17.
After some time Aleksey Bumin left the group. His place was given to Aleksey Shtalenkov, who was the producer of the “Bleeding Dirt” single. Then a keyboard player Sergey Volk joined Deadmarsh.
The musicians recorded demo materials for different concerts organizers in Aleksey Shtalenkov’s studio.
In the summer of 2001 Deadmarsh successfully performed on the festival “Rock-Cola” in Novopolotsk. They took prizes in following nominations: “The Best Rock Group” among metal groups, “The Best Guitar Player” – Aleksey Shtalenkov and “The Best Drummer” – Aleksey Gladysh. They also performed on the festival “Rock in the Midnight” (Rock Apounachy), which took place as a part of “Slaviansky Bazar-2001” in Vitebsk. After that event the keyboard player left the group.
In the autumn 2001 the musicians compound the demo tracks with the “Bleeding Dirt” single and released a mini-album “Harmony Prevails”. The album was presented during the above mentioned radio program, “Zateriany Mir” (The Lost World). However it was decided to re-record the songs in future full size albums for the sound of the initial record didn’t show the true sound of the group.
An interesting fact about the album is that initially the composition “Wheels & Fire” was created as a vocal one, but by the time of the recording the text and the vocal had been not ready, therefore it was recorded as an instrumental composition. In 2001 that version of the composition was included in “Hard Life – Heavy Music” CD-compilation of the BMA group label, which specialization is mainly Belarusian music.
The following cooperation of the BMA group and Deadmarsh resulted in the creation of the concert program in Belarusian.
The same experiment was done with the popular composition of Metallica, “Enter Sandman”. The cover in Belarusian was called “Lusterka Nochy” (The Mirror of the Night), it was recorded in 2002 in Aleksey Shtalenkov’s studio. In 2002 that track was included in “Hardcore Mania – Chadu!”, the compilation of the BMA group. Deadmarsh, together with group N.R.M. and Polish group ZERO-85, took part in the concert in support of the compilation in the concert hall “Minsk”.
Soon after that Aleksey Shtalenkov, the guitar player, left the group. His place was given to Aleksey Bumin, who had played in the group before. The work was going on.
In the summer 2002 Deadmarsh took part in “Basovishcha-2002”, the annual festival of music in the Belarusian language, which took place in Poland. They presented a composition in Belarusian. Petr Elfimov did the vocal part, instead of Nikolay Gidlevsky, who was temporally absent.
In the end of the year Deadmarsh began to record their first full size album in Belarusian, which is titled “Grany”. They worked in “X-Noise Factory”, Gennadiy Sirokvash’s studio. For the new album with guitar parts played by Aleksey Bumin three compositions from the minion “Harmony Prevails” were remade: “Addicted” (“Nepazbezhnasc”) and “Nemiga” (“Aposhny Zhah “Niamiga”). The latter composition was included into “Hard Life – Heavy Music, II”, the next CD-compilation of the BMA group, released in 2003.
On September 2, 2003 the album “Grany” saw the world. And on September 7, 2003 the concert of the group took place in “Reactor”, the club. It was a presentation of the album, which was covered in the TV program “Tochka” (Point).
The music video was made for the composition “De la musique avant toute chose…” (directed by Dmitriy Mezin, camera man Aleksandr Garel, montage Igor Kondratovich). The composition “Rodny Kyt” was included into “Zhic’ dl’a Belarusi”, CD-compilation of the BMA group, released in 2005. It was dedicated to Larisa Geniush, the Belarusian poetess.
In autumn Aleksey Bumin was invited to take part in the annual festival of guitar music, “Grifomania-2003”, which took place in Minsk. The group prepared an instrumental program, one part of which Aleksey Bumin successfully played accompanied by the group. “Sherwood Forest”, composition from this program, can be found on CD-album of Deadmarsh called “To the Sky”, released in 2008.
In the beginning of 2004 in “Ska Records” studio the group recorded another composition in Belarusian called “Nia Bolsh Za Dim”. In 2004 this composition was included in “Generaly Ajchinnaga Roky”, CD compilation of BMA group, and in 2005 it was included in “Metallection lll”. In the end of 2004 the group started the recording of the second full size album in English called “To the Sky”. The album was recorded in Petr Elfimov’s studio with Andrey Starovojtov as a sound man. As it was planned before, with Aleksey Bumin playing guitar parts, the group rerecorded compositions ”Bleeding Dirt” and “Wheels&Fire” from the album “Harmony Prevails”. Vocal parts were also added. However, because of the unforeseen circumstances the process of recording lasted many years. In April 2007 the work was finished, in the same year front man Nikolay Gidlevsky left the group. His place was given to Vitaly Borushko in the summer 2007.
Concert – presentation of CD “To The Sky” took place in may of 2008 and after it drummer, bass and vocal left the band. And only in autumn of 2008 band found a new members – vocal – Alexander Knysh, bass – Dmitry Angelov, drums – Sergey Zvarika. And in autumn band recorded a new video – “Ne u va mne” – belarussian language version of “One-day sorrow” from cd “To The Sky”.
The first concert with new members take place in may, 2009 where band surprised their fans with cover to Annihilator’s “21”.
Now the band is working on new program.
