Crepuscularia
by METALSITES.net @ February 26th, 2006Biography
The history of the doom metal band from Domodedovo, Crepuscularia, has its beginning in 2000, when 2 friends, LordPain and Vindir, understood that it would be not bad to devote their lives to music. That idea developed little by little and embodied in the real actions only in December, when LordPain bought the first musical instrument in his life – the acoustic secondhand guitar for $3. By that time Vindir had already had a guitar and some experience; it was decided to take a friend nicknamed Bulban as a third person in the band. After 2 days the repetitions began…
In that time LordPain was mad about gloomy and sad music, so he had no doubts about what style to play in. The two other members of the band were not against.
During 2001 the two founders of the band were learning the compositions of the British leaders of doom-metal and playing them on the acoustic guitars anywhere: at home, in houses, in forests etc... Half a year after beginning music studies LordPain learned to play by ear and gradually reduced to zero almost the whole “Turn Loose The Swans” and also a lot from Lake Of Tears, whose songs also were in the “cover-repertory” of the band...
In the beginning the musicians planned to create a full-blooded band, to rehearse and to perform in concerts. But the main problem was the incompleteness of the band. Actually Crepuscularia consisted of 2 men…
After some repetitions it was decided that Bulban would have to leave the band because he (as it turned out) badly understood doom metal and besides he didn’t visit the repetitions at all. By the end of the year a substitute for him was found. Bass guitarist Matt, who even forked out on Hurricane bass guitar, joined the band, but there weren’t any real repetitions with him too... As a result of that, Vindir bought Musima De Luxe bass guitar and became the bass guitarist. It was decided not to invite any more musicians temporarily and thus Crepuscularia became a duet.
In February of 2002 LordPain finally collected the money and bought the secondhand Jolana Galaxis electro guitar with “Turbo Metal” distortion pedal. Hated disgusting acoustic guitars went in the past on forever. But the new instruments proved to be not in a good condition, so Pain had to take a file in his hands and other tools in order to bring his guitar in the playable condition...
2002 became the next stage in the history of the band – it joined the Domodedovo underground... It all started when LordPain became acquainted with a man named Tenebrus in February, with whom a lot of projects would be making subsequently, but it all was later. And then in summer LordPain received from the guitarist of Dogma Guitar Pro and other useful soft; the repetitions already took their place only at the apartment and only with drums. The own material appeared little by little, but it was far from compositions of real value... LordPain was obsessed by the idea to write the heaps of true doom material in the style of the early albums of MDB and Anathema, but without fast riffs... In other words, truly depressive sound, no cheerful and happy melodies, nothing but negative. But Vindir didn’t share his friend’s thirst for the gloomy sound. And, as long as there was no own material, they played the covers of the songs of famous doom metal bands including not very heavy like Lake Of Tears.
The year ended by the festival in the local palace of culture, devoted to the birthday of some youth newspaper. In the honor of the festival there was organized the appearance of the local rock-bands, by the ending of which LordPain with the bass guitarist and the drummer of Ekleiptos arranged a doomy jam-session and performed “Black Voyage” and “Cosmic Weed”... So, despite a big wish to participate in concerts, Crepuscularia remained just a rehearsal band… Even the participation in the life of the local underground didn’t help to find people, who could play doom…
2003 proved to be quite successful year for the band. At the beginning of it, on Januar 7 the musicians of Crepuscularia with Tenebrus and the members of Dogma band went to the local club in order to make acquaintance with the representatives of the local underground. Even the joint performance was planned, but other bands didn’t arrive and Crepuscularia had to play alone using a CD with drums. It didn’t look like a concert, but nevertheless it was the first and the last time of the presence of that band on the scene. The practice of performances with drum-machines was later abolished in the club and Crepuscularia had never had a drummer...
In the beginning of February the musicians thought that it would be quite well to make a record. The own material was in that time in a very deep embryo state, so that’s why it was decided to record covers. No one had the experience of home recording and that is because they had to make it somehow or other. LordPain recorded all guitar parts and sang with a clear voice in Black Voyage, and Vindir recorded bass-guitar parts and growling for 2 songs. As a result of that all the quality turned out very foul, but there was made about 20 copies of the CD and distributed to friends. A beautiful picture of a forest (which was taken from a CD with cliparts) was put on the cover of the album. The easy name was chosen, but it suited very well for that style: "Flowing Tunes Of The Infernal Sorrow".
In March LordPain bought guitar processor Zoom 505 II and the intense repetitions started. In that month there was also made an interview for the DEUM-fanzine, but it didn’t came into the world... Subsequently the musicians were working over their own material, amount of which rapidly rose. At the same time there were made some projects in different styles with Tenebrus, and the work over them is still continuing...
In autumn LordPain grasped the music soft somehow and substantially improved the technique of playing. It was decided to record some covers, some new and some old. The work over it continued for about two weeks in the much more comfortable atmosphere than the record of the previous material, that’s why the guitar parts were performed almost perfectly (taking into account skill level at that time, of course). The other member, Vindir – the bass guitarist and vocalist - couldn’t reach such results: he didn’t make much progress as it was expected, therefore some of his parts had to be removed. However, the quality of record, reached at that time, was still home-quality. Six fresh-recorded tracks that were 20 minutes in total were put to the collection of rarities “Anxiety Sights From The Deepest Underground”, that were recorded during 2003. But the group needed a new demo on a single CD, so it was decided to release the new tracks on a mCD. That release was called “Dark Thoughts Of Death”, copied about 20 times and was well criticized in the local circles.
The conception of the development of the music of the group in the direction of true-doom-metal came off second-best in that year, because there were written some compositions which couldn’t be considered as the standard of gloominess and depressiveness. So the creative work of Crepuscularia started embracing almost all substyles of doom except traditional and sludge...
At the end of that year Vindir composed 2 compositions (Dirge and Listopad) and decided to create his own doom-project. But after some time these two tracks were included in the set-list of the main band, because it was decided to reduce the number of the joint projects. This way the repertory of Crepuscularia became more various, because before that moment only LordPain wrote the material.
The next 2004 year became full of problems the hardest for the group and its 2 musicians. Vindir decided to re-qualify himself from guitarist into bass guitarist and bought the Chinese guitar J&D, with which there were only troubles at the first time, and Vindir suffered a strange illness and he couldn’t normally sing for some months. LordPain fell into depression which dragged on half a year and he very limply composed new riffs. The only thing which can be marked is that there was made the trial version of “Empty World” (instrumental) which was composed as far back as in the June of 2003. But this track laid on HDD for some months and it wasn’t distributed anywhere...
By the middle of the year the depression came to naught, LordPain eventually bought new instruments (on which he collected money for about half a year), but there were also troubles with them. In August there was created a page on realmusic.ru, where were placed “Empty World” and the last year’s cover of Marche Funebre...
In December LordPain decided to make some trial records and release the demo with own material of the band. Vindir, despite his membership in the band, didn’t any part in the record. Because of the organization problems, there was only about 24 hours for the record, and it was hard to work alone, so the result was corresponding: the quality of sound was disgusting. Moreover, all instruments merged into such a muddle, that it seemed like it was a record, made on a dictaphone which is in a chest. However, on 28 December “Anxiety Sights From The Deepest Underground II” (so was the CD called) was issued on the local underground label DEUM records in CD-R format, and the mp3 were laid at www.realmusic.ru in the low bitrate.
2005 started very gloomily basically because of hapless “Anxiety Sights II”... Even taking into account the underground sense of purpose, SUCH a record didn’t promise anything good. But actually because of the tracks which were at realmusic.ru, Crepuscularia gained the first listeners. Of course reviews in press were not expected.
About that time AeternaNox and LordPain started creating a site for the band. The work continued for about a month, by 20 February domain www.crepuscularia.ru was registered. Teo organized hosting and the site began to work.
At the end of spring good news happened: LordPain bought a computer, so he got an opportunity to make experiments with sound, read articles about sound engineering, and to master soft. The results didn’t keep waiting - fresh test-samples proved to be much better than all previous records! Persistent work continued up to summer when the musicians of Crepuscularia together with Tenebrus took part in the record of track Sabulum of project Pharus for Doom-art.ru Compilation 2005. The quality of the final mix was ordinary enough, but it didn’t prevent the song from having enthusiastic opinions of listeners and critics.
During the further time LordPain was preparing for the record of the new demo of Crepuscularia. The conception of the design of the layout was worked out together with AeternaNox. The work over texts, arrangements and drum parts also progressed. In December LordPain started the record of the remained tracks, but the guitar with new strings was always out of tune. A lot of time had to be spent to solve this problem. And Vindir also let down: he recorded his vocal parts just anyhow for two songs. By the end of the year he completely lost the interest for the joint work and left the band.
But in spite of all problems the work was finished in a good time. Just for some nights mixing and mastering were done. The news about the fresh release named “Buried And Forgotten” appeared on the site of the band on 31 December. The CD included five own tracks already known by “Anxiety Sights II” and also the cover on one of the Anathema songs. Despite a lot of bugs in the record, this work proved to be much better and high-graded than all that was done earlier. The musicians also founded DIY-label Anthropocide productions for the realization of the CD.
