Batter

Biography

Batter was formed by Martijn and Rudi in 2002 with the name of GRAFVELD. Grafveld is Dutch, and literally translates to Gravefield or Graveyard. Their goal was to play metal which would primarily target the Thrash/Black metal area.

They looked for other participants who'd like to give the band a "try-out", to see whether the style was liked by all participating musicians.

The try-out was in the summer of 2002 and consisted of:
Martijn - Vocals
Rudi - Guitars
Alex - Bass
Thierry - Drums

After the try-out, the band Grafveld was formed with these 4 members. In the following months, the band gathered weekly to play thrash-black metal.

After a couple of months, they decided it would be nice to have a second guitar player. The fifth and latest member was found in Harro, a friend and acquaintance of both Rudi and Martijn. Also, with the fifth member, the band decided to change their goal. The goal changed to play Thrash metal with influences of all sorts of other metal-styles as well, like death, heavy, speed and doom metal. A couple of previously written songs were erased, and new songs were written instead.

In the spring of 2003, the band became fed up with the name Grafveld. In the long and heated discussion that followed this rather radical decision, the choice fell on Batter. "To batter" is a rather more appropriate name for a thrash metal band instead of the more eerie name of Grafveld.

The name BATTER was chosen in the month of August, 2003 and is still used ever since.
