Biography
FolkStone is a young Italian Medieval Folk Metal band, citing bands like In Extremo, Corvus Corax and Schelmish as their influences. Medieval Folk Metal seems to be the turf of German bands, but these Italians can certainly compete.Like most Folk Metal bands, there are a lot of musicians involved in creating the music. Which is not a surprise when hearing the rich sound the band creates, with instruments ranging from the standard metal equipment like the guitar to bagpipes and flutes. Most of the folk sounds are created by the bagpipe playing the lead melody.
The band displays excellent musicianship and plays like a tight unit. Quite an achievement for a young band with so many members.
The lyrics are in Italian. Which takes some time to get used to, because this type of music is normally associated with German or Scandinavian languages, but it sounds surprisingly good with the folk metal sound. The vocals are handled by both female and male singers. The focus is on the male vocals which have a rough edge that reminds me of Korpiklaani. The female vocals are mainly used as a backup to the male vocals. There are some spoken parts too.
Luckily, the production is excellent. A absolute must for music like this, because it would be a shame to miss out on the nuances created by the use of all these instruments.
